Watkins Glen - Day 1 - Red Newt Winery and Bistro

Thursday, August 18th, 2011 (continued from last blog post)

After visiting the Watkins Glen State Park and Gorge, we went back to the Sunset on Seneca bed & breakfast to get ready for dinner. The owners, Frank and Donna are very kind and welcomed us into their home.  The house is situated on Lake Seneca, and we had full access to their dock and lake front property.  Even our room, "the White Room" had a beautiful view of the lake.  Lake Seneca, one of the Finger Lakes, is so peaceful - I could just sit and look out onto the lake for hours.

We got ready for dinner and dressed up a little bit for our night out at Red Newt Winery & Bistro.  It was a nice change of pace to enjoy a meal at a fine dining establishment!  Here we are all dressed up, including playing around a bit on the swing at Sunset on Seneca.

The restaurant was a short distance from our B&B, just down the road about a 10 minute drive.  We enjoyed the scenic drive along the lake, where you could see waterfalls and rock wall from one side and the view across the lake on the other side.

At Red Newt, we unfortunately arrived a little too late for a wine tour.  We did enjoy some wine at the restaurant with our meal - a local bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Damiani Wine Cellars in the Finger Lakes region.  In fact, our waiter pointed out that a co-owner of Damiani was enjoying a meal at a nearby table in the restaurant!  It was fantastic to taste the wine that was produced directly in the area.  The wine was absolutely lovely!

It also helped matters that it was half-price wine night on Thursdays at Red Newt!  Of course, we would have purchased a bottle regardless but this was a nice surprise!  As the sun began to set, we started receiving our meal and it was absolutely delicious!  They had plenty of vegetarian options for us and it was so yummy.  We enjoyed such a fabulous meal and we would not hesitate to return to this amazing restaurant!  Here are some pictures of the food we enjoyed:

Cornmeal Crusted Black Bean Cakes (With roasted corn salsa and cilantro sour cream):

Local Organic Spicy Greens (With shaved shallots, roasted corn, black beans, and a cilantro roasted garlic vinaigrette):

Farfalle - Finger Lakes succotash (zucchini, summer squash, roasted garlic sweet corn, red onion, arugula) and a roasted tomato sauce topped with Parmesan: (Poolie's entree)

White Lasagna - Seasonal vegetables, spinach, ricotta cheese, roasted garlic cream sauce (Loolie's entree):

And as for dessert...I was pretty full at this point but there's always room for dessert!  Poolie had a blueberry crumble with vanilla ice cream and I got a chocolate "paté" with raspberry and cream.  And of course, a coffee!  Delicious!  My apologies for some blurry photos, especially the dessert...as the sun set, the lighting got worse, and my camera skills got worse as I drank more wine ;)

Back at the B&B, we took another walk (at night) out to the dock.  I was greeted by a friendly, adorable cat that lives at the house.  This cutey polydactyl (has an extra toe on each paw making for huge paws!) calico kitty was very loving, purring a lot!  She let me pick her up and hold her in my arms right away!

We had a fun-filled, action packed day in Watkins Glen!
